Here's how - colouring in rub ons

My latest sketch on my sketch blog features a grid to organise six photos on the page.

Here it is! See how each photo has its own little mat. The sketch has subtitles and journaling on these mats but...I just knew that these Daisy D's rub ons would be perfect for the journaling.

There was just one little problem!

Because of the very patterned paper, the white rub ons did not show up so out came my Derwent water colour pencils. I love how it looks now. All mine!

Supplies:

Here's how:

  • Start by cutting one piece of cardstock as your base.
  • Cut the second sheet slightly smaller and adhere it.
  • Sand the edges of each photo making sure that the white core of your paper is showing. This will act as a visual break between your photo and the paper without you having to mat it.
  • Now cut six rectangles of patterned paper. To do this I placed my three photos across the page and then measured how wide they would need to be.
  • Adhere your photos according to the sketch.
  • Using your Cricut machine, cut out a variety of flowers and put brads through their centres. You can use any type of flower here.
  • Use pop dots on some of the flowers to give some dimension. Adhere all flowers. Make sure that the flowers bleed across each of the mats to visually join them together.
  • Make a title using your Cricut machine. Change the size of the letter each time. To get a variety of colours place scraps onto your cutting mat and manually move your blade to cut the letter. Adhere your title.
  • Cut a frame from your overlay using your Cricut machine. Either cut two squares one inside the other or cut a silhouette frame.
  • Apply your rub on. See below for detailed instructions.
  • Use a paper piercer to prick holes holes around your page for sewing. For example, prick holes outside and on your frame and then sew it onto your layout. Prick holes on the outside of some of your letters and sew stitches over them. Finally do this to the rub ons too. Make sure you use a visual triangle.
  • Apply a circle of DM dots over the word mother.
  • Stand back and admire your work!

Now...let's look closely at applying that rub on.

  • Using your craft knife, cut the rub on out of the frame.
  • Using scissors cut the rub on apart and place it roughly where you want it. Make sure that some of the letters bleed across a few layers to visually tie them together.
  • Apply the rub on with the applicator.
  • Take a watercolour pencil and colour in each letter.
  • Use a wet cotton bud to lightly smear each letter with water.
  • Sew on the word mother making sure that at least the M and the R have stitches on them.
